Pesticide Chemistry and Its Environmental Consequences

Pesticides are chemically diverse substances used to control insects, weeds, fungi, rodents, and other organisms that can affect agricultural production, public health, and stored products. Their effectiveness and environmental behavior depend strongly on molecular structure, solubility, volatility, adsorption, persistence, degradation pathways, and interactions with biological systems. After application, pesticide residues may undergo photolysis, hydrolysis, oxidation, microbial transformation, transport through soil and water, or accumulation in particular environmental compartments. Some compounds and transformation products can affect non-target organisms and contribute to ecological and human-health concerns. This paper examines nine major dimensions of pesticide chemistry and its environmental consequences, including chemical classes, physicochemical properties, degradation, soil and water behavior, bioaccumulation, non-target effects, analytical monitoring, resistance, and sustainable pesticide management.
